The History and the Vision of S.T.E.M. Kindercation
Formally under the program name Partners at Play from 2010-2012, S.T.E.M. Kindercation was founded by Kweilin Wofford in 2013 with the goal to provide an early start in S.T.E.M. education to preschool students. At the time she was a co-founder, part owner, and education director of a kindergarten readiness academy that specialized in offering S.T.E.M. subjects in their daily academic regimen. There, she designed an educational system that exposed her preschool students to Chemistry, Genetics, and Geography, just to name a few from the young age of 2.
She was aware that traditionally, students in the U.S. begin the study of Chemistry in the 10th grade, Biology in the 9th grade, and Physics isn’t a requirement at all. This late introduction she believes places our children in the non-competitive category for opportunities in advanced S.T.E.M. careers and college readiness.
In addition, her extensive background in early childhood education, child development, and human services motivated her to bring to the forefront that even at the age of 2; children can begin to absorb academic systems that would better prepare them for higher education with the proper exposure.
Our vision is to create opportunities for youth from Pre-K to 8th grade to be exposed to the subjects of science, technology, engineering, and math early in their academic careers, thus ensuring a foundation is set for successful and competitive practices in the S.T.E.M. fields.
Since S.T.E.M. Kindercation’s official launch in 2013, this program has educated over 500 children throughout family support centers, daycare centers, and school district sponsored summer enrichment camps across Allegheny and Westmoreland counties. We now offer services outside those counties and throughout the tri-state area. Our goal is to offer our services throughout the continental U.S.
